Art Strings- NJ Symphony Orchestra

Art Strings combines the visual and performing arts to raise funds for the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra’s extensive education programs. The NJSO commissioned 10 local visual artists to create individual works of art using violins as their canvas. Devoted NJSO volunteers generously donate their time to display the violins and sell raffle tickets for a chance to win one of these works of art. The transformed violins will be displayed at NJSO concerts and other selected venues throughout New Jersey during the 2016–17 season. The drawing will be held on June 26, 2017.

I have the privilege of having been selected as one of the artists.

For my violin, I chose the musical piece “The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires” by the Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla.

Piazzolla is without a doubt one of the greatest Argentine composers and musicians, whose work centered around Buenos Aires and its beloved tango. To represent his beautiful piece “The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires” I chose to evoke a very typical urban art style known as “Fileteado” to convey the feelings, soul and music that are so deeply interconnected in the identity of the Buenos Aires culture.

“Fileteado is a type of artistic drawing, with stylized lines and flowered, climbing plants, typically used in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is used to adorn all kind of objects: signs, taxis, lorries and even the old colectivos (Buenos Aires' city buses). It is usually completed with poetic phrases, sayings and aphorisms, emotional or philosophical. It has been part of the culture of the Porteños (inhabitants of Buenos Aires) since the beginning of the 20th century. The fileteado was recognized as an art after 1970”

In the design, I have incorporated images such as the Obelisc, Jacaranda flowers (beautiful purple-blue flowers), the Argentine flag and the traditional lamppost (inspiration of many tango lyrics)
